Postdoctoral Researcher or PhD Candidate, with strong knowledge in mechanistic chemistry / enzymology
The Biochemistry group (http://bio2.aalto.fi/en/research_groups/biochemistry/) transfers biochemical processes from their natural environment to the laboratory for industrial applications. We focus on the biocatalytic conversion of chemical energy (fuel) to electricity, in order to develop advanced energy solutions. We seek to also apply the reverse process, electricity to fuel, in order to store excess electricity from renewable sources efficiently.
To achieve our goals, we keep unravelling metabolic principles and enzyme function in natural microbes (in particular anaerobic archaea), and we apply synthetic biology to create the ideal metabolisms and enzymes for our industrial applications.
Research is carried out at our excellent facilities at Aalto University, School of Chemical Engineering (http://www.bioeconomyinfra.fi/). The laboratory is situated on the main campus of Aalto University in Otaniemi within the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (http://bio2.aalto.fi/en/).
The goal of the project is to study archaeal enzymes and elucidate their reaction mechanisms. A focus will be on methyl-coenzyme M reductase, a nickel(I) enzyme with several post-translational modifications. Experiments will be carried out with purified enzymes in order to study function, kinetics and mechanisms. Possible projects also involve synthesis of substrate analogues, electrochemistry, or advanced spectroscopic methods (NMR, EPR).
The research project is within the mission of an industrial application, but we are currently conducting fundamental research in order to discover new chemical strategies in nature, which we intend to publish in high-level journals.
