Imagine

  • The master's thesis is being carried out as part of the international research project REAP "Revealing drug tolerant persister cells in cancer using contrast enhanced optical coherence and photoacoustic tomography" with renowned partners from industry and research.
  • The project includes, among other things, the development of a manufacturing process to produce nanoparticles using nanoimprint lithography and thin-film technology (sputter deposition, thermal evaporation). Electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and optical spectroscopy are used to characterize the nanostructures.
  • The aim of the research is to use the manufactured nanoparticles as contrast agents for photoacoustic microscopy and tomography. An acoustic wave is generated in tissue by the contrast agent and is then detected with integrated optical resonators. The aim is to provide an improved tool for cancer research.

Engage

  • The AIT is running a clean room and operates the instruments and equipment required for fabrication and characterization.
  • Part of the thesis is also the acquisition of theoretical concepts and the preparation of literature studies.
  • Fabrication of nanostructures by means of nanoimprint lithography and the deposition of thin layers of various materials (e.g., gold, titanium oxide or permalloy) form an essential part of the task.
  • In addition, a structural and optical characterization of the manufactured nanostructures will be carried out.

Achieve

  • You will gain experience in the field of international applied research with a special focus on cleanroom technology, nanoparticle fabrication and characterization of nanostructures and nanoparticle dispersions.
  • You will be trained in scientific working and will have the opportunity to discuss experiences with scientific excellence promoters.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:

  • Ongoing master's studies, preferably in the field of physics, chemistry, nanotechnology
  • Good knowledge of the characterization of nanostructures
  • Experience in experimental work and ideally previous knowledge in cleanroom work
  • Interest in focusing on nanotechnology
  • Disciplined and self-motivated working style; the ability to work both independently and in a team
  • Ability and creativity to solve problems
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English

Details:

  • Start-date: ideally as soon as possible (September 2022, at the latest).
  • A remuneration of EUR 621,-- gross per month for 15 hours per week.
