Single Molecule Microscopy – Superresolution Imaging – Biophysics of Membrane Proteins
A PhD position for a DFG-funded project in single molecule biophysics is available in the laboratory of Dr. Maximilian Ulbrich at the University of Freiburg. We are looking for an independent and motivated individual who holds a M.Sc. degree in Biology, Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline.
The goal of this project is to resolve the assembly of protein complexes in biological membranes by single molecule imaging in living cells, and advance the related technical approach. Our laboratory is primarily interested in the assembly of neuronal receptors like the AMPA receptor and GPCRs, and the dynamics during signaling processes of receptor tyrosine kinases. The work includes wet lab biology (cloning, biochemistry, cell culture), instrumentation (assembly of custom single-molecule microscopes), and programming to control equipment and evaluate results.
The PhD position will be associated to the Research Training Group 2202 "Transport across and into membranes" (www.taim-uni-freiburg.de). The RTG is funded by the DFG and focuses on the characterization of transport processes at a molecular level. The three-year structured program consists of lecture series, seminars, method courses, a summer school, and symposia. In addition, participants will be offered the possibility to attend courses for individual needs.
Ideally, applicants should bring enthusiasm for science, creativity, technical and programming skills, as well as experience in microscopy, molecular biology and/or biochemistry.
