The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts independent research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
In the department Exposure of the BfR is in the unit “Epidemiology, Statistics and Exposure Modelling” from immediately permanent to fill the following position:
Scientific Officer in Epidemiology/Statistics (m/f/x)
Reference number: 3286 | to Salary group 14 TVöD | Place of work: Berlin | Application period: 20.06.2023
This is a full-time position, but part-time employment is possible. Salary/pay will be commensurate with duties and qualifications.
Tasks:
- Independent selection, application and further development of statistical and epidemiological methods in the context of BfR risk assessments
- Assessment of epidemiological studies including the development and provision of scientific support and quality assurance of protocols for conducting systematic reviews, meta-analyses and weight-of- evidence assessments for epidemiological studies including quantitative bias analysis
- Implementation of statistical and epidemiological analyses with a wide and modern range of methods including machine learning
- Independent preparation of scientific publications and project proposals and preparation of project reports
- Independent preparation of scientific publications, project proposals and project reports
- Statistical consulting,, teaching of training courses in statistics, epidemiology and risk assessment
Requirements:
- University degree (Master, diploma or comparable university qualification) in epidemiology, statistics, public health, mathematics, computer science, biology, veterinary medicine or a similar a subject with knowledge in modern statistics and epidemiology, doctorate required
- Regular scientific publications in national and international journals with peer review procedures in a field relevant to the field of epidemiology and statistics
- Documented experience in mathematical statistics, epidemiology and related subjects (mathematics, computer science), good theoretical and practical knowledge of frequentist and Bayesian methods (generalised linear models, non-linear models, multivariate analyses, meta-analyses, mixed models), computational statistics, simulation-based procedures and methods of machine learning and artificial intelligence, as well as advanced knowledge of epidemiology required
- Experience with epidemiological studies and systematic procedures for knowledge integration, quantitative bias analysis
- Proficient knowledge of statistical software (R as well as SPSS or SAS or equivalent programs) required
- Very good knowledge of a programming language or software program (Python, R, C++, Matlab etc.) required
- Documented knowledge of modelling (e.g. different epidemiological models, spatial models, simulation-based models, etc.)
- Good knowledge of spoken and written German and English is required
- Flexibility, ability to work in a team and resilience as well as the willingness to travel for work are required.
