Scientific officer in the project “Stability of hepatitis E virus in meat products” (f/m/x)

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts independent research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

In the department Biological Safety at the BfR in the unit “Viruses in Food”, the following temporary position is available for one year from 1 June 2023 as part of the third-party funded project “Stability of hepatitis E virus in meat products”:

Part-time employment is possible.

Remuneration will be paid in line with the tasks undertaken and the applicant's qualifications.

This role is part of the project “Stability of hepatitis E virus in meat products” funded by the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (BLV, Switzerland). The aim of this project is to determine the inactivation rate of the hepatitis E virus during the production and preparation of specific meat products.

Tasks:

• Optimisation of cell culture methods for infectivity testing of hepatitis E viruses in meat products
• Examination of the stability of hepatitis E viruses during the production and temperature treatment of meat products 
• Analysis and publication of the obtained data

Requirements:

• Completed university degree (master’s, diploma or similar university degree) in human or veterinary medicine, biology or a similar subject, a doctorate desired
• Very good knowledge and experience with molecular biological, serological and virological analytical methods required
• Practical professional experience with cell culture techniques required
• Practical professional experience in handling infectious pathogens necessary 
• Proven independent publication activity advantageous
• Very good knowledge of written and spoken English required, knowledge of German is advantageous but not a prerequisite
• Good IT skills as well as a conscientious approach to work, flexibility, capacity for teamwork, resilience and willingness to travel on business are also required
