Fraunhofer IWES, as partner in the LIKE consortium, provides a PhD position for the project "Combination of floating lidar measurements with numerical modelling for an integrated offshore wind resource assessment" (ESR 4). The overall research objective of the PhD project is to investigate how floating lidar technology, installed on a frequently running ferry connection, should be applied in an optimal way to assess wind energy relevant offshore wind resources and site conditions, both in combination with mesoscale flow modelling and the use of satellite remote sensing data. Amongst other things, this includes the definition of the optimal lidar setup and configuration for this type of application, an integrated data concept considering the different data sources, a methodology for an optimal combination of different data sources, and a comprehensive uncertainty assessment.

Your day-to-day work is very varied as you will combine high-level research with industry relevant applications. You will have your position at Fraunhofer IWES but also be part of a European network of young researchers including trainings and research stays at different institutions – in particular, you will have three secondments of 2 – 3 months each at the University Bergen (Norway), the University Oldenburg (Germany) and DTU Wind Energy (Denmark).

For participation in the program, you are not allowed to have more than 4 years of equivalent research experience (after obtaining your master’s degree) and you have not been awarded a title of PhD. Furthermore, you are not a resident of Germany or carried out work in Germany for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. You fulfill these criteria? Great! Your project should start between January 1st, 2020 and April 1st, 2020 and has a duration of 36 months. You have a master’s degree or diploma in Engineering or a scientific discipline?
Your focus lies in Meteorology, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, or a similar field? During your studies you have already obtained knowledge in energy meteorology or wind physics? Besides, you also have skills on remote sensing, as well as the analysis of measurement and simulation data? We will be delighted if you can impart your skills here right from day one and develop them further. You will present your results to your team, our customers, and the academic community. This is not a problem for you in both written and spoken English.
Is your work-life balance very important to you?
We have a flextime and core time system which allows us to be very flexible. Would you like to be able to define your work location flexibly? At certain times, we offer you the possibility of working from other locations, too. After all, even though your work is important to us, we want you to have time for your family and yourself, too.

Approval and enrollment.
The scholarship for the PhD is subject to academic approval. The candidate will be enrolled at the Institute of Physics of the University of Oldenburg.

The working time consists of 39 hours per week.
