ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, and technical and social services on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With each of its 11 faculties and more than 100 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes that are grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its employees as well as its students.

YOUR TASKS

  • You spend a minimum of 70% of your assignment on scientific research regarding the aquatic animal health of fish, shellfish, and crustaceans. Sustainable aquaculture with studies on host-pathogen interactions, alternatives to antimicrobial agents, alternative cultivation of animal proteins, (alternatives to) animal experimental models, and the link with human health are central to this. This involves multidisciplinary research.
  • You contribute to education and teaching at master's levels, including in the courses AquaHealth Club, Basic Principles in Aquaculture Techniques, and Advanced Aquaculture Techniques (in English).
  • You supervise master's students in exercises, internships, and master's theses in the Master in Aquaculture and the Master of Science in Health Management in Aquaculture (in English).
  • You supervise doctoral students.
  • You contribute to the application for and management of (scientific or policy) projects.
  • You are willing to actively participate in the education committee of international programs and thus help shape the quality of education.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a doctoral degree (preferably in Bioscience Engineering, Veterinary Medicine, Applied Biological Sciences in the field of aquaculture, or equivalent).
  • The diploma requirement must be met at the time of appointment. For diplomas obtained outside the European Union, an equivalence certificate from NARIC must be provided.
  • You have conducted research in the field of aquatic animal health, preferably with various aquatic species (fish, shellfish, crustaceans) and their larval and juvenile stages.
  • You have demonstrated outstanding promise and versatility as a researcher during your doctoral work and as a postdoc, and can provide evidence of this in your application.
  • You have a keen interest in student supervision and teaching in academic and/or advanced academic programs and are open to implementing and assisting in the development of (new) e-learning teaching methods.
  • You are willing to contribute to communication about the program and academic research.
  • You can be flexible with working hours.
  • You have relevant scientific publications on aquatic animal health (fish, shellfish, crustaceans) in international and national scientific journals with broad dissemination and expert peer review. Demonstrating multidisciplinary research is important.
  • You have experience in applying for and managing (scientific or policy) projects and can demonstrate this in your application.
  • You are communicative, a team player, enthusiastic, and passionate about aquatic research and education provided at the Aquaculture and Artemia Reference Center lab.
  • You can communicate fluently in English.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a temporary appointment of 3 years. A second appointment of up to 3 years can follow
  • Even if you have already been appointed earlier (whether or not at another university and whether or not in the same field of discipline) in a first term of up to three years, you can apply
  • The second appointment does not have to be immediately connected to a first term
  • Your appointment will start on 1 September 2024 at the earliest
  • Your remuneration will be determined according to salary scale AAP5. More information about our salary scales
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, etc. A complete overview of all our fringe benefits
