Microscopy is an indispensable tool for studying living organisms. Recent advancements in microscopy have paved the way for groundbreaking discoveries in biology and medicine. In our research group, we are utilizing innovative microscopy techniques, to investigate fundamental biological processes.

We are currently seeking a new PhD student to join our team. Candidates should possess a Master’s degree in biophysics, nanoscience, or a related field. A strong interest in applied biophysics and a desire to specialize in biophysical measurement techniques are essential.

Our research projects focus on using advanced microscopy methods to study cell mechanics. This particular project aims to explore the mechanical properties and biological functions of the actin cytoskeleton in the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Understanding the role of the actin cytoskeleton is vital for unraveling the mechanisms behind motility, host cell invasion, and intracellular trafficking in this organism.

Our research group is based in Munich-Martinsried and comprises a diverse team of physicists, biologists, chemists, and veterinary scientists. At our facility, we also employ cutting-edge super-resolution microscopy techniques such as STED (Stimulated Emission Depletion) and STORM (Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy), alongside our other advanced microscopy methods.

Requirements for candidates:

  • A Master's degree in biophysics, nanoscience, or a related field
  • Prior experience with fluorescence microscopy and cell culture
  • Proficiency in English
  • Demonstrated curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm for acquiring new knowledge and skills.
  • Strong motivation and the ability to work independently as well as within an international, multidisciplinary team
  • Experience with super-resolution microscopy and/or cell mechanical measurement techniques, such as atomic force microscopy (AFM) or traction force microscopy (TFM), is a plus
