2024-08-18 (Europe/Brussels)

Background
The Environmental Economics research group focuses on answering empirical questions with high societal urgency, for example those linked to global climate change. To this end, the research group employs sustainability analyses (techno-economic and life cycle analyses) and applies these to the development and implementation of (the production of) clean technologies with the aim of supporting policy making and accelerating the decarbonization of our society. The group publishes in leading economic and interdisciplinary journals and is involved in several large international research consortia with funding from EU framework programs and Belgian and Flemish funding sources, among others. It collaborates with leading research institutions around the world.
Currently, the group consists of 4 professors and 30 researchers and affiliates. The complexity of environmental issues requires multidisciplinarity. Therefore, the research group is closely embedded in the CMK, where we collaborate on multidisciplinary projects.

Education task
Your teaching assignment may consist of courses within the undergraduate and graduate programs of the Faculty of Business Economics or other faculties where we teach economics courses. You also contribute to the development of new courses.

Research mission
You help to complementarily strengthen the existing research portfolio of the Environmental Economics research group. You lead both economic and interdisciplinary research projects within the research group and the Centre for Environmental Sciences (CMK). You do so in collaboration with scientific partners within and outside Hasselt University. Important objectives are the realization of publications in internationally recognized journals, the expansion of the existing research network, and the supervision of PhD students.

Profile

  • You have a doctoral degree in applied economics, economics, energy economics, environmental economics or in a related field with an explicit economic profile (or equivalent)
  • You have a strong research profile that fits within the current research portfolio as shown under the 'your team' section and demonstrates that you have the potential to publish scientific research in leading international journals.
  • You have experience in the quantitative, empirical modeling of the transition implied by the decarbonization of our energy system (as opposed to detailed modeling of specific cases).
  • You have the necessary didactic, communication and organizational skills to provide outstanding teaching in both our undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Experience with working in an interdisciplinary group of economists and scientists/engineers is a plus.
  • Experience with successfully applying for funding from Flemish, Belgian and European agencies is a plus.
  • Experience with supervising doctoral students is a plus.
  • Your teaching assignment also contains the coordination of courses. Therefore, you need to master Dutch and English at the ERK level C1. We will provide you with the necessary language support. For Dutch you are expected to have this ERK-level C1 at the moment of application for this vacancy.

Offer

We offer a full-time appointment as a lecturer/assistant professor in the tenure track system for 5 years. After each year the candidate's performance is evaluated. This will lead to an immediate permanent contract as a senior lecturer/associate professor, if the Board of Directors favorably assesses the candidate involved, based on previously set and shared grading criteria.
Starting date to be agreed upon. Preferably you are available to start as of the second semester (February 2025) of the academic year 24-25. Interviews will take place in September 2024.

Selection procedure
You can only apply online up to and including 18 August 2024.
The selection procedure consists of a preselection based on application file, an interview and a test lesson / presentation. An assessment for the selected candidates is part of the selection procedure.
After each stage the candidates are downselected.
