Research group lead (m/f) - Heidelberg Institut of Public Health (HIPH)

at the earliest possible date searched for the Heidelberg Institut of Public Health (HIPH)

The position is limited to 2 years.

The Institute of Public Health at Heidelberg University, Germany’s oldest university and a leading hub for health-related research in Europe is looking for a Research Group Lead. The position is not tied to a particular project. Instead, we are looking for a researcher who will contribute to, and lead components of the institute’s focus on population health and intervention research in resource-poor countries. We will consider applications from researchers with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests. Candidates should have had in-depth training in quantitative research methods.

Tasks and responsibilities

This position is an opportunity to collaborate with experienced mentors and academics at Germany's leading and largest global health research institute, while building an independent track record of publications and grants. The researcher will be expected to publish in leading peer-reviewed public health research journals and will be encouraged to apply for research grant funding. Funding for global health research, such as through the German Science Foundation, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the European Research Commission, and private foundations, has increased substantially in Germany and is expected to continue doing so in the future. Germany and the European Union also have a number of prestigious personal grant opportunities for junior and senior researchers, such as the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Emmy Noether Programme of the German Science Foundation, and the Starting and Consolidator Grants of the European Research Commission.

Under the mentorship of a professor at the institute, the Research Group Lead will lead their own research team and seek out funding for research projects. The Research Group Lead will have the opportunity to supervise Master, PhD, and Dr. med (thesis as part of medical studies in Germany) students. We will also support those interested in doing a “Habilitation”, which is a post-doctoral qualification based on scientific publications manuscripts and teaching that confers a title equivalent to Associate Professor in the United States. The researcher will have the opportunity to teach as part of the institute’s Masters and/or doctoral programme but will not be required or expected to do so.

Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees). As an equal opportunity employer the HUK is committed to increase the percentage of female scientist and therefore especially encourages them to apply. Equally qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preference. Candidates from any nationality can apply.

Prerequisites

  • Doctoral degree with quantitative training, such as epidemiology, health policy, economics, statistics, or equivalent. In exceptional circumstances, we will also consider applications from those with only a Masters degree if they have a substantial research track record, including publications.
  • Outstanding emerging track record in a research field relevant to population health in low-and middle-income countries.
  • Excellent communication skills in english (german is not necessary).
