Founded in 1984, IFREMER is a French public organization and its budget approximates 240 million euros. It is operating under the joint authority of the French Ministry for Higher Education, Research and Innovation, the French Ministry for the Ecological and Solidary Transition, and the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The main objectives of the Ecology and Models for Fisheries Science research unit (EMH) are to acquire knowledge and develop methods for an ecosystem approach to fisheries management, in particular for integrated evaluation of marine exploited ecosystems. The three research themes concern (1) mechanisms and responses of ecosystem components, (2) integrated ecosystem evaluation, 3) management strategy evaluation. In addition EMH contributes to the Ifremer fisheries information system and provides expert knowledge and expertise on various fisheries and monitoring related issues.
This post-doc is attached to the FFP MACCO project (2019-2023) which aims to evaluate alternative management scenarios for the demersal mixed fishery in the Bay of Biscay using the ISIS-Fish simulation platform. The proposed fishing effort standardization method will improve the standardization of nominal fishing effort in ISIS-Fish and provide abundance indices for the fishery's by-catch species.
The calculation of abundance indices based on catch per unit effort requires the calculation of a fishing effort from the fishing time. Since the systematic acquisition of fishing vessel trajectories (via the Vessel Monitoring System), we have been able to refine the calculation of fishing time from the time spent at sea. However, using this fishing time as fishing effort to calculate abundance indices assumes that all vessels are independent. The purpose of this work is to propose a method for calculating an effective fishing effort by taking into account the dependence between vessels, while distinguishing between similar behavior of vessels related to the environment and the spatial distribution of the resource, and collaborative/competitive behavior. For this purpose, this project plans to carry out a joint analysis of all the vessel trajectories of a fleet using a mathematical method based on graphical models and network inference.
PhD (or Foreign Equivalent) in advanced statistics or quantitative ecology. Experience with advanced statistics, programming in R. Experience working in fisheries science or a related field would be appreciated.
