At the Science, Engineering and Technology Group, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture of KU Leuven, there is a part time vacancy for independent academic staff in the field of architectural practice on the Sint-Lucas Brussels and Ghent campus. The structure of KU Leuven combines faculties and research departments in a multi-campus model. The Faculty of Architecture consists of the academic architecture programmes (architecture, interior architecture, and spatial design and urban planning) on the Sint-Lucas Brussels and Ghent campuses. The faculty is responsible for the organisation of educational activities (www.arch.kuleuven.be). The Faculty is driven by a consciously assembled diversity of practices and is renowned for its future-oriented education that cultivates a freedom of exploration. There are currently 2100 students of which 350 are international students. The Department of Architecture (www.architectuur.kuleuven.be) is responsible for the research in architecture, interior architecture, urbanism and spatial planning at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences (Leuven, Arenberg) and the Faculty of Architecture (Brussels and Ghent campuses). The department is an international expertise centre in these domains and the research is led by numerous professors and research groups with around 150 (international) PhD students. Both the education and the research are performed across the campuses by a staff of around 250 people.
You actively and loyally contribute to the larger collective of teachers, students and researchers. You are responsible for the development of and shape a continuum of practice, education and research from which you work (design-wise) on projects with realisations (written and non-written output) that are not only relevant, but also valorisable in the respective fields. Participating in shaping an Academic Design Office (ADO) is an important task in this respect. Your professional practice forms an active, continuously evolving breeding ground.
This academic design environment should be seen as an 'internal practice' or 'internship', where students participate in practice-based or design-based research projects and acquire an academic attitude and methodology in the process. Within an ADO, a synergy is thus created between practice, education and research. You contribute to the further development of this concept as a possible answer to the impending dichotomy between practice and the academic world in Architecture.
Your practice forms the basis for your research
Your research contributes to the development of the authenticity and the further strengthening and anchoring of the design-driven and practice-based research at the Department of Architecture and contributes to making the overlapping field between practice and academia visible.
Your research contributes to knowledge production (trans- and interdisciplinary) and expertise through social service or applied-oriented studies, assignments, research projects, spin-offs, etc. and/or through projects focused on fundamental research.
You associate both internal and external productions of your own practice and/or all production of the ADO, which you valorise as research output explicitly to the Department of Architecture, such as prizes, nominations, special realisations and research work in the category Artistic and Design Realisations AOR = NTRO’s (Non Traditional Research Outputs)).
You are involved in, facilitate and promote doctorates with a design approach, as a supervisor or as a member of the supervisory committee.
We are looking for candidates with an established, active (interior) architectural practice that shows a remarkable (niche) point of view in relation to current building practice, in terms of design aspects and/or aspects of the design process and/or aspects of execution. The candidate has the capacity to make this practice, and the insights it generates, operational and transferable in a (studio) educational environment and in a research context. In its set up and production, the candidate's practice shows an investigative, questioning attitude towards both the profession (the 'practice') and the discipline (the 'theory formation'). The candidate has a highly developed authentic, personal design fascination and design language that concretises itself in projects that present themselves as challenging spatial ideas in our real world and in the common, mainstream practice of (interior) architecture in order to create openings for new, critically engaged forms of practice.
Inventive craft(wo)manship refers here to the importance of the 'art and skill of making' in achieving inventive spatial constructions (buildings, architectural elements, interiors, objects, spatial interventions...). This is a form of architectural design that is situated close to the skin of both the building and the occupant/user. A great attention and passion for materiality steers the design here. Inventive craft(wo)manship embraces the non-sterile stubbornness of matter and the contaminations and disturbances that influence the creative process in the living environment in which a design materialises into form and becomes meaningful throughout the creative process.
We offer part time employment (50%) in a vibrant and intellectually stimulating design environment.
