LUT University’s Department of Separation Science is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher in separation technology in food processing

In this role, you will engage in both theoretical and applied research, contributing to advancements in academic understanding and industrial innovation. Key responsibilities include assisting the principal investigator in the supervision of doctoral students, developing research proposals, publishing in leading scientific journals and conferences, and participating in national and international research projects involving the food and biorefining industries.

You will participate in the development and cooperation project Boosting the Sustainable Food Sector in Kymenlaakso, which drives growth in the food industry and supports related laboratory investments.

Key responsibilities

  • Conducting collaborative research within your team and with industry partners on both theoretical subjects and practical industrial applications.
  • Assisting in the supervision and mentoring of doctoral students.
  • Supporting the principal investigator in writing research proposals and securing funding for innovative projects.
  • Publishing findings in high-impact scientific journals and presenting at international conferences.
  • Contributing to the translation of research outcomes into industrial applications, collaborating closely with food and biorefining companies.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in chemical engineering, food processing technology, or a closely related field, with a proven track record of high-quality research.
  • Some experience in separation technologies and process development is necessary. Experience in preparative scale chromatographic separation (not analytical HPLC) is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with mathematical modelling and process simulation is an asset, but not a strict requirement.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a scientific research community and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

In addition, LUT University’s regulations require that a post-doctoral researcher has the ability for independent scientific work and teaching skills needed in the performance of the duties.

What we offer

  • Support from an experienced and enthusiastic research team.
  • Access to a state-of-the-art research infrastructure.
  • Opportunities to build strong networks in both academic and industrial settings.

Employment relationship and pay

The position will be filled according to the university's non-tenure career track career path. The employment relationship will begin with a two-year term, which can be extended by two years if the researcher meets performance expectations. The position includes a six-month trial period, which is typical in Finland.

The work starts on 2 December 2024 or as agreed. The job locations are LUT University’s regional unit in Kouvola and campus in Lahti.

The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The annual salary range of post-doctoral researchers is approximately 49 300–57 500 euros, depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
