The Department of Genetics, Pharmacology and Physiopathology of Heart, Blood Vessels and Skeleton (GENCOR) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of cardiovascular exercise physiology.

Position

• You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis. You will work on a project aiming to improve the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure through combined exercise echocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPETecho). The goal is to enhance HFpEF diagnosis, personalize treatment, and improve patient quality of life by understanding and targeting specific exercise-related physiologic abnormalities.
• You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
• You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the GENCOR Department.

Profile

• You hold a Master degree in Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, or Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy or you will have obtained it by the time you start.
• You can demonstrate excellent study results.
• Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
• Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
• You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
• Knowledge of management of patients with cardiovascular disease, more specifically heart failure patients, is recommended.
• The ability to perform and interpret cardiopulmonary exercise testing and/or echocardiography independently is an asset.

What we offer

• We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, renewable for another two years after a positive evaluation.
• The planned start date is 1 November 2024.
• Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
• You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
• You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken and Antwerp University Hospital in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
