The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UH Mānoa) seeks a dynamic, visionary, collaborative, and enterprising leader to serve as Dean of the College of Engineering (COE). This position is an exceptional opportunity to shape the future of engineering excellence at UH Mānoa, the state of Hawai‘i, and the Asia-Pacific region. As an indispensable facet of sustainable living in Hawai‘i and the Asia-Pacific region, COE is committed to ensuring that its academic and research efforts support the well-being of the people, economy, and environment of Hawai‘i. These efforts include addressing local industry demand, sustainability, and infrastructure while embracing complex issues which affect society at large (e.g., IT and cyber systems, food and water security). Furthermore, as the only engineering college with ABET-accredited programs in Hawai‘i, COE is committed to excellence in the development of the next generation of engineering leaders.
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative leader of the COE and provides leadership and vision in strategic planning and implementation of programs and leads COE development activities. The successful candidate manages financial resources and external relations and provides vision and leadership resulting in significant increases in resource acquisition for COE from private gifts, grants, contracts, and other sources of revenue. As a member of the UH Mānoa executive team reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean ensures that the mission and goals of COE are aligned with UH Mānoa’s and the University of Hawai‘i System’s vision and strategic mission. The Dean judiciously balances the best interests of COE with those of the campus, system and community.
The Dean manages an annual budget of approximately $36 million in state and federal funds, and represents the activities of COE to the wider university, alumni, industry, and donors as well as the Hawai‘i and Pacific communities. Since fall 2009, enrollment at COE has increased by 53%; there are more than 1,500 UH Mānoa students currently majoring in programs within COE. The college offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and a BS in Computer Engineering. The College has approximately 60 faculty, 30 support staff and 50 graduate assistants staffing three academic departments: Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and an organized research center, the Hawai‘i Center for Advanced Communications. Many unique resources exist across COE and UH Mānoa including the Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory, the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, and the Advanced Electron Microscopy Center. COE values learning, discovery, and engagement in formal and informal settings and strives for academic and research excellence and leadership in all its endeavors (For more information about COE, please go to https://www.eng.hawaii.edu).
UH Mānoa is the flagship campus of the University of Hawai‘i System and one of the select number of campuses nation-wide recognized as a Land-Grant, Sea-Grant, Space-Grant, and Sun-Grant university. A comprehensive research university, UH Mānoa is classified as a R1 doctoral university (highest research activity) and has notably broad and deep strengths in research, teaching, and community outreach related to the Asia Pacific region, enriched by its diverse, multi-cultural setting in Hawai‘i and location in the Pacific with proximity to Asia. As such it combines strong service to the State of Hawai‘i with prominent engagement as a national and international leader in higher education.
