As part of our energy materials activity we have opportunities to perform basic studies to understand durability and performance in materials and devices. This relates to both battery and fuel cell materials and spans a number of projects, usually with industrial engagement/support. We seek a specialist able to perform detailed electron and Raman microscopic studies and combine these with electrochemical studies. This relates to both emerging new technologies and to understanding degradation in more established technologies.
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to lead the St Andrews activity in this collaborative programme. The PDRA will perform research in Energy Materials, advancing the state of knowledge, publishing high impact papers and driving innovation.
The position will be for one year in the first instance but extendable to 3 years and is available for early start.
We would expect you to have a PhD in chemistry, materials, physics or engineering and experience relevant to energy materials synthesis, processing and characterization.

Scale up of Thermal Batteries for Flight Back-up Power
Research PhD Student
Thermal batteries are a well-established technology for delivering high power primary batteries in relatively small high performance applications. They have long-shelf life and high reliability and are typically deployed in safety applications such as ejector seats. They are generally manufactured by pressing pellets and are individually assembled. Here we wish to develop larger scale cells and batteries that will find larger applications such as flight, eg as back-up for helicopter flight, providing the essential reserve capability that is needed when flying in urban areas.
We will develop scalable and readily automated approaches that will both increase capability and reduce cost. The challenges relate to the chemistries involved but are facilitated by new processing capability that will become available at the start of the project.
The project is funded by DSTL with a 3 year stipend of £15,609. The nominated Research PhD student will preferably be either a British or French National and will be required to spend a minimum of 6 months in the partner French University in Nantes.

Development of novel thermal battery designs based on sodium chemistry
Research PhD Student
Thermal batteries are primary batteries with very long shelf lives that are utilised in high power applications. Currently these are based upon lithium chemistry typically involving LiSi anodes, FeS2 cathodes and LiCl/KCl electrolytes. There is still room to improve performance characteristics such as power and time of available discharge. Here we seek to explore alternative sodium chemistries. In particular, we will investigate alternative sodium based anodes such as sodium tin and new sodium based electrolytes such as LiCl/NaCl. Following on from these initial baseline studies, we will explore a range of alternative electrodes and electrolytes, guided by our ongoing experience in ambient temperature sodium ion batteries through our NEXGENNa Faraday Institute project. Studies will address electrochemical characteristics and structural studies both post-test and in situ.
The project is an ICASE award funded by EPSRC with stipend starting from £15,609 and will receive a top-up from AWE the industry sponsors. The nominated Research PhD student will preferably be a British National.
