The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

In the department Safety of Pesticides of the BfR is in the expert group "Testing and Assessment Strategies Pesticides" the following position to be filled with immediate effect for a fixed term of five years:

Part-time employment is possible.
The fixed-term employment is based on the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

Tasks:

As part of the "Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals" (PARC), the BfR is coordinating the "Hazard Assessment" work package together with the French partner authority ANSES. The aim of this work package is to close significant data gaps in the health risk assessment of chemicals, to develop New Approach Methods (NAM) and to contribute to the implementation of an Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP)-based Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA). With over 200 partners from all over Europe and a total budget of €400 million, PARC is one of the largest projects of its kind in the world. As part of numerous other comparable research projects (RiskHunt3R, TXG-MAP, ADME4NGRA), the specialist group is working on the development of testing and evaluation strategies for health risk assessments.

In detail, the tasks include:

  • Support in the scientific coordination of research projects, in particular PARC
  • Scientific planning, monitoring and evaluation of studies in vitro and in vivo
  • Development and testing of concepts for a NAM-based toxicological risk assessment
  • Initiation of co-operations within and outside PARC
  • Scientific collaboration in the development of in vitro tests for the regulatory evaluation of chemical substances 
  • Preparation of scientific publications and presentation of results at conferences and in expert committees
  • Support with data management

Your profile:

  • Completed university degree (Master's degree, diploma or comparable university degree) in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, chemistry, food chemistry, toxicology, pharmacy or (veterinary) medicine or a comparable discipline
  • Expertise in toxicology (e.g. through DGPT training courses or relevant study or work experience)
  • Enthusiasm for scientific work and writing specialised articles
  • Conscientious and independent way of working; very good computer skills 
  • Willingness to travel on business and to work temporarily in other European countries
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Flexibility, ability to work in a team and resilience

Desired:

  • Promotion
  • International experience and experience in the coordination of research projects on an international level 
  • At least good knowledge of German and one other European language
  • Practical experience in working with NAM and experience with NGRA
  • Experience in the management of research data
