The Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk organises the Bachelor programs in Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Informatics, Biology and Chemistry), including options towards farmaceutical, engineering and bio-engineering study programs. Hence, it is a very multidisciplinary environment, both from educational point of view as for research. At present, the mathematics research of the group is represented in its research groups Algebraic Topology and Group Theory (pure mathematics) and Mathematical Physics (modelling and simulation of physical phenomena & signal processing). As a member of the senior academic staff of the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, you will also belong to the Department of Mathematics and the Faculty of Science in the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of KU Leuven. The administrative language at KU Leuven is Dutch.
We expect that you will develop research activities in the field of applied mathematics and/or mathematics with physical background that complement and strengthen the existing research initiatives at Campus Kulak, and fits within the Department of Mathematics. Complementarity in the theme of Mathematical Physics (modelling and numerical simulation of physical phenomena and technical applications, for instance via digital twins) is an asset. You are encouraged to set up collaborations with other researchers at Campus Kortrijk as well as at other campuses of KU Leuven. In view of developing your own research program, you are capable of acquiring research funding in a competitive setting, and you are proficient in setting up national as well as international research collaborations. Furthermore, you are supposed to serve as an advisor to PhD-candidates and to publish in international leading journals within your field of research.
Your teaching tasks will consist of several mathematics courses at Campus Kulak Kortrijk, in the study programs within the Science, Engineering & Technology Group or in service education provided by this group. This includes basic courses in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics (for a diversity of academic programs) as well as more advanced courses in the Bachelor of Mathematics itself. Since the language of education for first Bachelor courses at KU Leuven is Dutch, the teaching assignments require an immediate and thorough knowledge of Dutch (C1-language level for Dutch is required for teaching). Your teaching duties can change depending on the evolution of the study programs at Kortrijk and can constitute a significant part of your duties. As an element of the educational and pedagogical profile of KU Leuven Kulak, active interest and professionalization in educational quality and training is expected.
You are keen in finding regional, national or international opportunities for collaboration with companies and other partners outside the university. You represent the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, your department, your faculty and your group in external activities and you operate as primary contact between the university and its regional partners. You actively participate in one or several outreach activities such as science-communication, lifelong learning or societal debates.
