SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron facility, located on the Saclay Plateau near Paris. It is a multi-disciplinary instrument and research laboratory whose mission is to conduct research using synchrotron radiation, to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation on the beamlines, and to make these developments available to the scientific community. SOLEIL synchrotron, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications across a wide range of disciplines including physics, biology, chemistry etc., is used by over 5 000 researchers coming from France and abroad. SOLEIL is based on a synchrotron source that is at the cutting edge both in terms of brilliance and stability. This large scale facility, a partner of the Université Paris Saclay, is a “publically owned” private company, founded by the CNRS and the CEA and counts about 500 staff members.

The CASSIOPEE beamline is a soft X-ray beamline dedicated to high resolution Angle-Resolved PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (ARPES), spin-resolved photoemission and resonant spectroscopies in the 8 eV-1500 eV photon energy range. The beamline is divided into two branches, supplying photons to two end-stations (Spin-resolved Photoemission, and high-resolution Angle-Resolved Photoemission), both connected to a Molecular Beam Epitaxy chamber for sample growth and characterization.

The scientific topics studied by the CASSIOPEE team (and close associate scientists) are mainly transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), topological materials, materials for spintronics (half-metals, magnetic tunnel junctions…), oxide surfaces or hetero-structures (2D electron gases, defects on oxide surfaces…), electronic properties at surfaces (effect of correlations on surface electronic structure, self-assembly of adatoms, nanostructuration…) and correlated electron systems (pnictides, iridates…). Welcoming the beamline users community also offers the possibility to deal with other topics like low-dimensional systems, molecular films (magnetic, self-organized…), cuprates or other 2D-like oxides, rare earth compounds…

The CASSIOPEE team comprises a total of four permanent people, three scientists and one technician and its main duties are:

  • the maintenance and the development of the whole instrumental setup (beamline and end-stations)
  • the scientific and technical assistance to external users in conducting their own experiments
  • to conduct an internal research activity

I. Mission

We are looking for a scientist (f/m) who will be part of the beamline team, composed by two other permanent scientists and a technician. She/He will have the opportunity to develop her/his own research program. She/He will be encouraged to develop collaborations and attract new users.

She/He will actively participate to the user-support program and will be involved in the scientific, technical and methodological aspects of the beamline team activities.

II. Qualifications & Experience

The candidate should have a PhD degree in physics or material science, and a post-doctoral experience. She/He should have a very good knowledge of ARPES, either on a laboratory setup or preferably in a synchrotron radiation facility and a good knowledge of the condensed matter physics basics. Skills in the field of ultra-high vacuum equipment and surface science tools (surface preparation and characterization, thin film deposition) would be appreciable. The position requires autonomy together with the ability to work within the beamline team. The candidate must be fluent in English (written and spoken) and the knowledge of French would be appreciated.

III. General conditions

This offer corresponds to a permanent position. 

The assistance to users imposes some on-call duty periods (typically 6 days per month in average, including one weekend) and may require, in case of need, on-site interventions outside regular working hours.
