  • Applicants must show a strong interest in teaching as well as a high-level scientific record in accordance with UGA’s ambitions and standard. They should also have a sense of responsibility, in particular with regards to environmental and social issues. 

Teaching profile:

  • The IM2AG Department’s training programs cover a wide range of fields from computer science to fundamental mathematics, as well as fields at the crossroads of disciplines (cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, etc.). At IM2AG, the training programs are the responsibility of three departments: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science departments. The successful candidate will join the Computer Science department.
  • The Computer Science department is responsible for the Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, the Master's degree in Computer Science, the MIAGE Master's degree and the magistère degree in computer science.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to teach computer science at bachelor’s and master’s level. They are also expected to teach robotics.
  • Additionally, they may contribute to the development of our IT courses.
  • They must be able to teach in both French and English.

Research profile:

Modern robotics stands at a critical juncture: designing robust control and perception architectures that guarantee autonomy, safety, and adaptability for agents operating in complex or human-populated environments. This Chair addresses this challenge—revolutionized by the emergence of artificial intelligence techniques—by proposing integrated robotics approaches where perception, decision-making, and action are tightly coupled to meet the demands of autonomous systems interacting complexly with their environment. It leverages complementary strengths at GIPSA-lab through the COMLEARN, COPERNIC, and MOVE teams. COMLEARN brings expertise in modeling and generating communicative behaviors (speech, gestures, expressions) for social robots, while COPERNIC focuses on resilient autonomous navigation, integrating perception, planning, and control under uncertainty. Finally, the MOVE team adds a physiological dimension with research on medical assistance devices. 

The Chairholder will be responsible for developing robotic methods to design systems capable of reliably perceiving their environment, making real-time decisions, and acting safely and adaptively, whether interacting with humans, navigating uncertain environments, or assisting patients. Research may cover robotics ranging from low-level approaches combining classic control theory with data processing via frugal and physics-informed AI, to the development of foundation models for generating effective physical or social interactions, navigation approaches fully exploiting the environment, or personalized rehabilitation strategies. Special attention will be paid to integrating these methods into embedded architectures, where real-time constraints, robustness, and resource frugality are essential. 

The scientific environment offered by GIPSA-lab at Université Grenoble Alpes is particularly well-suited to this type of research. The candidate will benefit from access to diverse robotic platforms (social robots, drones, mobile systems) and multimodal capture equipment (motion sensors, audiovisual systems, haptic interfaces). These infrastructures will allow validating contributions on concrete use cases ranging from human-robot interaction to autonomous navigation in dynamic environments, via assisted rehabilitation. Existing collaborations with clinical partners, such as the Grenoble Alpes University Hospital (CHUGA), will also provide an ideal framework for developing innovative, user-centered assistance technologies. 

The profile sought is that of a researcher passionate about the challenges of autonomous and interactive robotics, with solid expertise in control theory, robotic perception, or machine learning for robotics, or more broadly AI for autonomous systems (computer vision, multimodal AI, speech and language processing, multimodal foundation models, etc.). Experience in experimental validation on real platforms or collaboration with clinicians or industry would be a major asset. The candidate will need to propose an ambitious project grounded in robotics realities, capable of aligning with local, national, and international dynamics (PEPR, Europe, etc.) while contributing to the fundamental advancement of the field. Finally, a strong interest in teaching and mentoring students is essential to guide the next generation of roboticists.
