PhD Positions in Cloud, Fog and Edge Computing

The Institute of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck, Austria seeks for excellent PhD students to carry out research in Cloud, Fog and Edge computing.

Your profile:

You are enthusiastic about developing and investigating innovative research ideas and systems within the discipline of distributed systems? You have a master’s or equivalent degree in computer science with excellent performance? You are a highly skilled Java or C/C++programmer? You have good knowledge in programming with scripting languages and experience with data bases? You have a strong background in distributed systems, Cloud computing and virtualization techniques? You stand out from your peers because of strong commitment and independent work? You are a team player and communicative (excellent oral and written English skills, good ability to write scientific publications)?

Our offer:

Successful candidates will join a dynamic, international and world-wide highly regarded research team. As fully funded PhD students they will investigate novel Cloud, Edge and Fog techniques that are built based on Java and modern virtualization methods. The particular research topics of interest include

  • robust, secure and service agnostic resource management,
  • data portability,
  • data and work distribution,
  • dynamic allocation of cloud services,
  • automatic discovery and composition of services,
  • orchestration and usage of services,
  • SLAs and QoS,
  • scheduling and optimization,
  • resilient, energy efficient and secure runtime environments,
  • application development environments, and
  • programming

for Cloud, Fog and Edge infrastructures.

The research of this PhD positions will be conducted as part of the ASKALON Cloud environment (http://dps.uibk.ac.at/cloud2/). Our PhD students are given the opportunity to work with some of the most advanced Cloud, Fog and Edge infrastructures in Europe and gain interdisciplinary expertise by participating in national and international (EU funded H2020) projects. Note that the working and study language as well as the entire PhD course and research program are held in English only. There is no need to learn German for these positions.

The University of Innsbruck (UIBK):

UIBK is a global Top-200 university with a long history in scientific computing. Distributed scientific computing is a primary research area at UIBK. Besides numerous funded research programs in the area of Clouds and Grids, in 2010 an international doctoral school in computational interdisciplinary modelling (FWF Austrian Science Fund – Doctoral Program) has been established where highly qualified international PhD students are trained in modelling, simulation, numerical mathematics and techniques for parallel and distributed computing. Apart from interdisciplinary, an innovative teaching concept combined with strong international networking are key to this program. UIBK has been involved in a substantial number of national and international Cloud computing projects including several FP5, FP6, FP7, and H2020 projects.

Numerous application development environments, programming paradigm and tools have been created by various groups at UIBK to simplify the effective use of HPC and Cloud architectures as the basis for the next generation of performance-oriented and energy-aware applications. Among others, the tool set includes the ENTICE tool set (http://www.entice-project.eu) as well as the ASKALON Cloud environment (http://www.askalon.org).
