Job description

This topic is centred around model reduction of port-Hamiltonian systems, both concerning analysis and application.

The aim is to develop reduced-order models of port-Hamiltonian systems while preserving the structure of the original system. For the explicit construction of the reduced-order model, recent methods utilizing model reduction on manifolds and machine learning techniques will be reviewed and further methods will be developed/newly created. This project lies in the interface between analysis, numerical mathematics and machine learning.

The position will be supervised by Dr. Silke Glas and will be part of the Mathematics of Systems Theory group headed by Prof. Hans Zwart within the Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Twente.

Your profile

  • You have, or will shortly acquire, an MSc degree in mathematics or a strongly related field;
  • You are a highly motivated mathematics scholar with a strong background and interest in (numerical) mathematics;
  • You are curious about mathematical challenges in the described fields;
  • You are interested in coding/programming or already have some prior experience in this;
  • You are proficient in English.

Our offer

  • As a PhD candidate at UT, you will be appointed to a full-time position for four years, within a very stimulating and exciting scientific environment;
  • Your salary and associated conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU);
  • You will receive a gross monthly salary ranging from € 2.872,- (first year) to € 3.670,- (fourth year);
  • There are excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, and a solid pension scheme;
  • Excellent facilities for professional and personal development
  • A minimum of 232 annual leave hours (29 days) in case of full-time employment is based on a formal work week of 38 hours. A full-time employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours (12 days) on an annual basis.
  • You will have a training programme as part of the Twente Graduate School where you and your supervisors will determine a plan for a suitable education and supervision.
  • Free access to sports facilities on a green campus.
