Research programmes
Luke has four research programmes:
Profitable and responsible primary production, Circular bioeconomy, Climate smart carbon cycle and Adaptive and resilient bioeconomy. With these research programmes, we aim, for example, to

  • increase the profitability of primary production whilst simultaneously ensuring the mitigation of climate and environmental impacts,
  • promote smart and sustainable use of renewable natural resources and raw materials, and accelerate the green transition,
  • beat the global climate crisis and its impact on ecosystems, as well as to stop the deterioration of the state of the aquatic environment,
  • and support maintaining the ability to operate calls for an understanding of the interactive relationships between ecosystems, production systems and society

In addition to these, Luke has a Statutory and expert services programme which means that we carry out statutory government services such as monitoring natural resources, certifying plant production, inspecting control agents, storing genetic resources, producing data on greenhouse gases, supporting natural resource policies and producing Finland’s official food and natural resource statistics.

From our work, over 70 % is research, around 20 % is statutory and expert services, and the rest is divided between customer and statistical services. In the end of 2023, we had 650 on-going projects out of which 80 were EU projects. From our total 151M€ funding 85M€ is budget funding and 66M€ is external funding.
Working at Luke
Of our employees, around half are researchers and the other half experts. Luke's multidisciplinary, innovative and ambitious research personnel includes research scientists, doctoral researchers, postdocs, senior researchers, principal researchers, associate professors, and research professors. In addition, we have experts working in service groups (e.g., IT, HR, finance), research infrastructure services and as directors.

In addition, we have multiple research infrastructure sites which enable research and knowledge to solve the challenges of our time. Our diverse research infrastructures have been built up alongside decades of research work and provide suitable frameworks for experimental research on renewable natural resources throughout Finland.
Our research infrastructures

Agriculture

Research on agricultural production and its environmental impacts, smart agriculture, food systems, growth conditions, bioeconomy, and new energy solutions.

Forests

Approximately 18,000 hectares of research forest for long-term forest research and experimentation, as well as shorter experimental studies.

Crop and horticulture production

Open fields, greenhouses, growth tunnels, as well as various research platforms and equipment for studying berries, fruits, vegetables, trees, and plants used in landscaping.

Fish and aquaculture

Research on aquaculture, selective breeding, wild fish populations, fish welfare, and sustainable fishing practices, as well as conservation of endangered valuable fish stocks.

Wild animals

Studying the behavior, physiology, genetics, reproduction, and diet selection of reindeer in natural pastures or under supplementary feeding.

Data services

High-quality data production and information flows from the sources to the end-users of the data, and the Biobank's valuable and diverse sample collection.

Laboratories

Versatile research laboratories, specialized laboratories, and support laboratories for research infrastructure cater to the needs of natural resources research.

Pilot platforms

Pilot platforms for circular economy solutions and food and feed research.
