The Department of Empirical Inference at the MPI-IS in Tübingen is looking for a PhD student with a background in physics or a related discipline to work in the area of machine learning, particularly in the domain of inverse problems, deconvolution and phase retrieval, starting as soon as possible. The project is in collaboration with the computational photography group. The aim of the research is to develop methods to compute and realize 3D ultrasound fields that will significantly go beyond the state of the art and open up new technological and scientific possibilities.
The successful candidate will develop computational tools to solve the high dimensional inverse problem of encoding arbitrary three-dimensional vector fields in a two dimensional phase map. The work concerns 3D field synthesis in holography and is important in the generation of ultrasound fields. The aim is to allow the input of freeform representations of the target field, to improve the quality of the reconstructed fields, and to explore methods of stochastic optimization and machine learning. The project is a close collaboration of theoretical and experimental groups and is a collaboration between the Max Planck Institute and the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Technology.
