In the context of the ERA IB2 project PolyBugs: In vivo cascades for sustainable access to monomers of high volume polymers, we are looking in subject of the final approval of the third-party funded project for one

PhD Student (m/f)
Subject: Bioprocess development for monomer production

Working time: 65% (25,35 h / week), limited for 36 months 

Your tasks:

Your work aims at developing a process concept for monomer production using a whole cell biocatalyst. This necessitates careful investigation of the optimal reaction conditions for the respective monomers, reactor concept design, and basic downstream processing. Your tasks within the project include:

  • Establishment of the experimental basis for biocatalyst characterization (e.g. growth and whole cell kinetics) in suspended and immobilized cell cultures
  • Development and evaluation of reactor concepts to perform biotransformation of cycloalkanes utilizing suspended or immobilized cell cultures
  • Establishment of basic downstream processing for purification and isolation of monomers
  • Based on these findings a laboratory scale process unit for the production of monomers will be established as the final outcome of this project

Your profile:

  • You hold a Master's degree in Biochemical engineering / Chemical engineering / Biotechnology or related fields
  • Experience in working with bioreactors / reactor modelling / downstream processing will be considered as an advantage, but not an requirement
  • You should be creative to develop and realize own ideas
  • You are a good team-player
  • You have good English skills
